St Columba Church
St Columba's is a Roman Catholic Parish church in Newton, Chester. It was built from 1964 to 1965. It is situated on the corner of Plas Newton Lane and Newhall Road in the suburbs, north of the city centre. Last month my daughter invited me to the church where her son and my grandson were getting baptised. I live in London and my daughter lives in Chester. I was travelling with my wife and one of my other grandsons to the church from London. My grandson booked a flight for us but at the last moment, all flights were cancelled to and from Chester. There was a storm at Chester that damaged the airport and the rescue operation was going on in Chester.
We had not much time and had to leave then and there from Heathrow Airport. I told my grandson to book an online cab service. He called company and reserved a cab to the church in Chester. My grandson often uses company whenever he is travelling to and from the airport. company told me that the driver was just around the corner and will be there shortly. In just under a few minutes the driver arrived at Heathrow Airport. The driver greeted us and placed our luggage in the boot of the cab. We were now on our way to the church in Chester. My daughter called, meanwhile, I told him about the situation and that we will arrive there in a few hours. The ceremony was going to be held at 1:00 in the afternoon and it was 8:00 in the morning. Firstly, we were going to my daughter’s house and from there we were planning on going to the church together in a group. But then I thought we should go straight to the church and save some time. My daughter and I agreed that we would meet in the church.
She told me if we could not reach the church on time, then she would hold off the ceremony until all of the family members are present at the church. We were now on our way to the church. We booked a cab from Heathrow Airport to St Columba Church, Chester. We were driving through heavy traffic and had to stop after a few miles because of the jam-packed traffic. After driving around fornearly five hours we finally reached the church.
It was a quarter to 1 o’clock in the afternoon. The driver gave us our suitcases and took his leave. It was a quite comfortable journey. My daughter and her husband were waiting for me at the entrance of the church. We were in touch through messaging and calls along our way to the church. So, they knew we were getting close to the church and came out to embrace us. My family is Roman Catholic and we take great pride in it. So, that is why we celebrate our roots by baptising our children. My grandson, Liam is 8 years old and it was his christening. We all took part in the ceremony and afterwards took some pictures with the family as well. It was one of the most memorable days of my life.
Unveiling the Best Places in St Columba Church
Columba, also known as Colmcille, was an Irish abbot and missionary evangelist who spread Christianity in Scotland during the start of the Hiberno-Scottish mission. He founded the important abbey on Iona, which became a dominant religious and political institution in the region for centuries. Columba was highly regarded by both the Gaels of Dál Riata and the Picts and is remembered today as a Catholic saint and one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. Columba studied under some of Ireland's most prominent church figures and founded several monasteries in the country. Around 563 AD, he and his twelve companions crossed to Dunaverty near Southend, Argyll, in Kintyre before settling in Iona in Scotland, then part of the Ulster kingdom of Dál Riata. They founded a new abbey as a base for spreading Celtic Christianity among the pagan Northern Pictish kingdoms. Columba remained active in Irish politics, though he spent most of the remainder of his life in Scotland. Three surviving early medieval Latin hymns are attributed to him. Columba was born to Fedlimid and Eithne of the Cenél Conaill in Gartan, a district beside Lough Gartan, in Tír Chonaill (mainly modern County Donegal) in what is now Ulster, the northern province in Ireland. On his father's side, he is claimed as being the great-great-grandson of Niall of the Nine Hostages, a pseudo-historical Irish high king of the 5th century. He was baptized in Temple-Douglas, in the County Donegal parish of Conwal. Columba lived in the remote district of Glencolmcille for roughly 5 years, which was named after him. It is not known for sure if his name at birth was Colmcille or if he adopted this name later in life; Adomnán (Eunan) of Iona thought it was his birth name but other Irish sources have claimed his name was Crimthann (meaning 'fox'). In the Irish language, his name means 'dove', which is the same name as the Prophet Jonah (Jonah in Hebrew is also 'dove'). Columba is also Latin for dove. Columba studied under Finnian of Movilla, who had studied at Ninian's "Magnum Monasterium" on the shores of Galloway. After completing his training at Movilla, he traveled southwards into Leinster, where he became a pupil of an aged bard named Gemman. After leaving him, Columba entered the monastery of Clonard, governed at that time by Finnian, noted for sanctity and learning. He became one of twelve students of Finnian of Clonard who became known as the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. Columba was a striking figure of great stature and powerful build, with a loud, melodious voice that could be heard from one hilltop to another. He founded several important monasteries, including St Colmcille's Church on Inishkea North, County Mayo. Some traditions assert that around 560 Columba became involved in a quarrel with Finnian of Moville over a psalter.
